Dangers of the One-Man IT Department

Recently, we were hired by an area veterinarian clinic whose head of IT had moved on and we were charged with making sense of their IT system and processes. It turned out that, although the former IT person was good at what he did, he was not very good at documenting and explaining his work. Because of that, no one in the office knew what they had, why they had it, and how it all worked together.

That’s where we came in. We pulled together what little documentation there was, evaluated the existing hardware and software, met with the previous IT employee to fill in the blanks, and then put together a comprehensive documentation packet explaining their systems along with recommendations on how it could be improved. They were thrilled, but there was one problem – they still didn’t have an IT person to manage it all.

Well, we now manage their IT full-time and have put in place many new systems to increase reliability of the current system (while avoiding costly whole-system “rip-outs” and reinstalls that occurs regularly when our competitors step in), implemented cloud backup solutions to protect their data 24/7 (that was not being done previously), and customized a service agreement that fits within their budget, gives them all of the support they need, and is consistent with the high level of service Tech Tonics is committed to (after all, it’s our reputation on the line!).

The most important addition – the practice now has a reliable team of IT experts to call on instead of relying on a solitary employee. The clinic won’t be left in a lurch again.
